Athletic Portraits

Three-point lighting: the simple setup that turns an athletic portrait into cinematic drama!

If you want senior photos that feel powerful, confident, and completely shareable on social media, a three-point lighting setup is one of my best tools in my kit. It’s clean, controlled, and—when used for athletes—perfect for highlighting muscle, movement, and intensity while keeping the focus on the subject’s face and expression. Below I’ll walk you through what three-point lighting is, and how I use it for athletes during on-location shoots in San Antonio.

What is three-point lighting? Three-point lighting uses three light sources:

  • Key light: the main, brightest light that defines the subject’s form.

  • Two back (or rim) light: placed behind the subject to separate them from the background and add an outline or “rim” of light.

Athletes want images that communicate strength, focus, and character. Three-point lighting sculpts the face and body, enhancing muscle definition and texture while allowing me to control mood. With careful positioning and light modifiers, I can go from dramatic and moody to bold and high-energy.

How I set it up on location

  1. Choose your scene and time. I also offer backdrops if you are looking for more studio-inspired and less natural environment images (as shown above).

  • Background: A simple background works best—an empty gym wall, metal bleachers, turf, a neutral architectural surface, or one of my backdrop selections.

  • Time of day: If you’re outdoors, late afternoon or early morning (golden hour) adds warmth; cloudy days give soft ambient light that’s easy to manage. I often shoot near sunrise or sunset in San Antonio to blend natural warmth with off-camera flashes for drama. My set up includes 3 lights that illuminates the athlete.

  • I love using simple poses that show intent: a pose that shows intent: hands on hips, dribbling, holding a bat/helmet, a focused stare, or a mid-action stance.

I love including sports in senior sessions — the energy, the focus, the story behind every pose. That’s why I love using a three‑point lighting setup for athletes: it creates a striking, dramatic look that highlights muscle, movement, and mood while keeping the focus squarely on you and your sport,, and that celebrate your dedication and the part athletics have played in your story. Ready to lock in a session that shows both your personality and your passion? Let’s make some powerful portraits that you’ll be proud to share.
